The Sheriff's Office provides security for the Courthouse, service of civil documents for the courts and the community, serves warrants, issues licenses for firearms and transports prisoners.
Firearm Licenses
Application/Renewal for a License to Carry Firearms
In order to apply for or renew a license you must complete the Pennsylvania Firearm License application and return it to the Sheriff's Office with $26.00 for the cost of the permit. Checks should be made payable to the Armstrong County Sheriff.
If you are mailing your application, please attach a copy of your Pennsylvania Driver's License. If coming to the office be sure to bring your driver's license with you.
You will receive notice by mail when your application has been processed and you can pick up your permit. Your photo will be taken for your permit, so you are required to pick up your permit in person. If this presents a problem please contact our office to make arrangements.
If your application is denied, you will be notified by certified mail and refunded $14.00.
You must be 21 years of age and a resident of Armstrong County to apply for a license with our office. If you are not a resident, you must apply in the county that you reside in currently.
Application/Renewal for a License to Sell Firearms
You must complete the application for a Pennsylvania License to Sell Firearms and return it to the Sheriff's Office with $57.00 for the cost of the license. Checks should be made payable to the Sheriff's Department. Please include a copy of your Federal Firearms License and Sales Tax License. Your license will be mailed once completed.

Sheriff Sales
Sheriff's sales are held every three months on mortgage foreclosure properties. Requirements for a Sheriff's sale in Armstrong County include:
- $1,000.00 advance costs
- Notice of Sheriff's sale of real estate
- Affidavit pursuant to Rule 3129.1 PA Rules of Civl Procedure
- Affidavit of service to lienholders
- Act 91 Certification
- Three copies of full legal property description for deed
- Three copies of short property description for advertising
- Property address
- Defendant's address if different from property address.
- All other items required by Rule 3129 PA Rules of Civil Procedure

Sales are held at 11 AM in the third floor hearing room of the Armstrong County Courthouse.
All sales must be filed in the Armstrong County Prothonotary's Office on or before the deadline for filing.
Properties for sale are advertised in the Armstrong County Legal Journal and The Leader Times.
Women's Handgun Safety Class
The women's handgun safety class is held once a year, in the summer at a local Armstrong County Sportsman's Club. The class is free and includes instruction and practice. Space is limited to 50 and participants must be at least 21 years of age.
The class was held on July 17, 2009, at the Burnt Ridge Bow & Gun Club in Cowansville, where 50 participants listened to speakers: Armstrong County Sheriff Larry Crawford, District Attorney Scott Andreassi, Chief Deputy Frankie Shumaker, Deputy Earle Floyd and Bill Roberts, Certified Firearms Instructor. Practice on the shooting range is carefully monitored by the Deputies. For more information on this program call 724-548-3265.
